Re-visiting the "One Minute Manager" by Ken Blanchard and Spencer Johnson triggered my desire to re-visit a wonderful story by Spencer Johnson entitled "Who Moved My Cheese? -An A-Mazing Way to Deal with Change in Your Work and in Your Life."
This is a simple story of four characters, Sniff, Scurry, Hem and Haw and how they deal with loosing their cheese and how they deal with finding and embracing new cheese. "Cheese" is a metaphor for what you want to have in your life and the "Maze" is where you look for what you want. The characters are faced with unexpected change, and one of the characters writes what he learns as he travels through the maze looking for new cheese. The "Handwriting on the Wall" allows him to discover how to deal with change so that he can enjoy less stress and more success.
The Handwriting on the Wall
Change Happens
They Keep Moving the Cheese
Anticipate Change
Get Ready for the Cheese to Move
Monitor Change
Smell the Cheese Often so You Know When it is Getting Old
Adapt to Change Quickly
The Quicker You Let Go of Old Cheese, The Sooner You Can Enjoy New Cheese
Change
Move With the Cheese
Enjoy Change!
Savour the Adventure and the Taste of New Cheese
Be Ready to Quickly Change Again and Again
They Keep Moving the Cheese
It is as simple as that. The story takes less than an hour to read and therefore is a good refresher and reminder of how to overcome, accept and embrace change when you were comfortable with how things were before they moved your cheese!
