“Primal Leadership, Learning to Lead with Emotional Intelligence” by Daniel Goleman, Richard Boyatzis & Annie McKee

"Great leadership works through emotions."

The emotional task of the leader is primal- that is, first –in two senses: It is both the original and the most important act of leadership. "Primal Leadership" by Daniel Goleman, Richard Boyatzis and Annie McKee demonstrates how the emotional intelligence qualities of a leader can be the most important, above and beyond basic intellect.

Intellect to some extent is a driver of outstanding performance; cognitive skills such as big picture thinking and long-term vision are particularly important. But calculating the ratio of technical skills and purely cognitive abilities to emotional intelligence as the ingredients to distinguish outstanding leaders reveals that EI –based competencies play an increasingly important role at higher levels in organizations, where differences in technical skills are of negligible importance. In simple words, you can be technically brilliant but will only make a significant difference at the highest level if you understand and accurately execute the EI competencies:

Emotional Intelligence Leadership Competencies –

SELF-AWARENESS
Emotional Self-Awareness
Accurate Self-Assessment
Self Confidence

SELF-MANAGEMENT
Self-control
Transparency
Adaptability
Achievement
Initiative
Optimism

SOCIAL AWARENESS
Empathy
Organizational Awareness
Service

RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT
Inspiration
Influence
Developing Others
Change Catalyst
Conflict Management
Teamwork & Collaboration

The book itself is a fairly academic read, but worthwhile if you are willing to take your leadership study to a different level.
